Powersports Helmet Buying Guide: ATV, UTV and Dirt Bike

A helmet is the most important safety purchase in powersports. Here is how to choose the right one for your riding style.

Safety Standards Explained

DOT is the minimum legal standard in the U.S. ECE 22.06 is more rigorous and increasingly common. Snell M2020 requires third-party testing and is the choice for racing. FIM certification is required for professional off-road events.

By Discipline

Motocross and ATV racing needs a full-face MX helmet with visor and goggle-compatible opening. Bell Moto-10, Fox V3, and Troy Lee Designs SE5 are the top options. UTV trail riding works well with full-face DOT minimum. Recreational trail ATV riding is fine with half or three-quarter face with goggles.

Fit is Everything

Measure your head at the widest point above the ears and across the forehead. Try on before buying when possible as shapes vary significantly between brands.
